Stars of David Comes Full Circle at Houston’s Evelyn Rubenstein JCC

Author Abigail Pogrebin and the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston have a long-standing relationship; one that comes full circle this month as the new musical revue, Stars of David: Story to Song, takes the stage at the J’s Kaplan Theatre. The musical is based on the best-selling book, Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk about Being Jewish, the publication of which brought Ms. Pogrebin to the J in 2005 for a speaking appearance at the Jewish Book & Arts Fair that year.

Now, over a decade later, the book has reached such success that it has been adapted into a musical play. While quoting from the stories and observations of myriad Jewish “stars” such as Dustin Hoffman, Joan Rivers, Leonard Nimoy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Steven Spielberg and many others, the musical also features songs created for the piece by some of Broadway’s greatest composers and lyricists. These include Michael Feinstein, Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof), Richard Maltby and David Shire (Baby and Big), to mention only a few. Recollections and reflections in the revue cover a wide range of topics as the celebrities share their intimate feelings about their Jewish identity, from their upbringing to experiences with antisemitism to the challenges of interfaith marriage and many other facets encountered in Jewish life today.

Produced jointly by the J and Houston’s Vital Arts Collaborative, Stars of David: Story to Song, features a cast of four versatile actors/singers, accompanied by a live onstage band. The cast includes Houston favorites Brad Goertz, John Gremillion, Amanda Passanante and Laura Yosowitz, under the direction of Luke Wrobel and musical direction of Jonathan Craft.

Marilyn Hassid, Assistant Executive Director at the J, says “You don’t have to be Jewish to relate to this funny and captivating song cycle. The moment I saw it in New York I knew we had to bring it here for Houston audiences to experience and enjoy.”
