Exploring the Artistic Process with Houstonís Own

Have you always wanted to learn how to do watercolor painting? Do you know the basics but need to catch up on techniques or refine your style? Join us to learn from Houston’s Own master artists. Our artists will provide you with a taste of their art form that could spark a desire to create your own incredible works of art.

Experienced and novice artists, young and old join us for our Exploring the Artistic Process with Houston’s Own workshop series at the J. We have a host of programs for all members of the community including drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, watercolor and beading and wire wrapping.

Thursday, June 21 |  7:00 PM-9:30 PM
Explore the basics of watercolor in this 2 1/2 hour workshop. Learn how to control color, paint with three different techniques and practice mark making with a watercolor brush. Complete landscape studies that can be used as a greeting card and have a blast while painting.

Get creative, bring your friends, and unwind. BYOB optional.

Ruth MittelmanHand Sculpted Jewelry Makerspace with Ruthi Drori-Mitelman

Are you interested in the design process of sculpted jewelry? This one session makerspace will be an exciting foray into the world of resin sculpting for jewelry.  Learn a new skill, meet like-minded people, and use your hands to create anything you can imagine, in a fun, easy going and casual atmosphere! Basic methods will be taught, and you will leave with your own handmade, sculpted, bead inlaid pendant.

About the Instructors

Ellen Orseck

Houston-based Ellen Orseck paints images of figures submerged in water, sumo wrestlers immersed in food, abstractions of creation, space, and turbulent weather. Throughout her career, Orseck has earned public arts commissions from state arts councils corporate collectors and private patrons in Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland.

She earned her Master’s Degree in Museum Education at George Washington University. Her postgraduate education also included four years at The Glassell School of Art.  Orseck is an art instructor at Rice University Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. She is represented by the Nicole Longnecker Gallery in Houston and works from her studio at 2101 Winter Street.

Ruthi Drori-Mitelman

Ruthi Drori-Mitelman, owner/designer The Rock Collections, has designed and produced high end jewelry sold in upscale retail stores. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts/ English Literature from The Open University of Israel, Tel-Aviv, Israel as well as Bachelor of Arts, Certified Architectural and Environmental Design from the Meimad School of Design and the Arts, Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Ruthi has been the fine arts instructor for HISD, Emery/Weiner School, the elementary and adult learning at the J. She has taught mixed media studio art, including drawing, painting, ceramics and jewelry making for all levels.
