J Meals on Wheels

As we all assess the damage in our lives, those of our family and neighbors, and work through the physical and emotional toll of recovery and relief, there’s another population that we don’t see at the J collecting donated supplies and water. Our homebound seniors who cannot get out of their homes to get to supplies are also in desperate need. We’re happy to report that J Meals on Wheels is back up and running and delivering meals to our homebound clients.

Thank you to our J Meals on Wheels Director, Kate Daniels. When Kate was thanked for getting the Meals on Wheels operations quickly up and running, she simply said, “Of course, we have to feed people.”

J Meals on Wheels trucks and volunteer vehicles are hitting the roads in force today serving our homebound clients, returning some normalcy to their lives in the wake of this disastrous storm.

Thank you to St. Philip’s United Methodist Church for hosting the J Meals on Wheels program and providing us space to operate out of.

Community Impact

While the J is trying to focus inward on our own rebuilding so that we can continue to serve the community in the future, for the past week we again served as a hub for donations and distribution of supplies. In coordination with the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and Jewish Family Services, we’ve coordinated volunteers and helped clean out countless homes in our community.

One community member shared the following, “…your volunteers helped several of my close friends that lost everything. They were moved to tears by the positive attitude and supplies. Staff at the J literally wiped the tears of one of my best friend’s face. This all breaks my heart. The J is a rock for the community.”

The volunteers who have come out to help also deserve endless thanks. One of our own JCC Maccabi Games® basketball coaches brought out his entire team to volunteer. They helped seven homes over the course of four days alongside their coach. To him and the countless number of volunteers who arranged groups of volunteers, thank you! Thank you for stepping up for your community; thank you for sacrificing your time and resources; and thank you for being a role model for the youth of our community and showing the difference that each of us can make by stepping up and helping those in need.

Floating Dumpster

If you’ve not had a chance, be sure to stop by our new pop-up art installation at the corner of S. Braeswood and Chimney Rock. “Floating Dumpster” can still be seen resting against the fire hydrant, where it came to rest after floating down the street from its perch behind the J. This installation is only available for a limited time (until our trash management company can come pick it up.)
