Continuing Adult Jewish Education
The Bobbi and Vic Samuels Center for Jewish Living and Learning offers Jewish classes, lectures, programs and other meaningful Jewish experiences for the Houston community.
Melton & More
Our Melton & More program offers rich, in-depth Jewish studies courses designed by The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning as well as local Houston faculty.
We offer two options: the Melton Core Program and the Melton & More Scholars Program. Apart from the willingness to make a commitment to Jewish learning, there are no prerequisites for enrollment in either of the programs.
Melton Core Program
The Melton Core Program is an integrated, sequential, course of Jewish study. Participants attend 30 two-hour sessions a year for two years. First year students take two courses:
- Rhythms, which covers the Jewish Life Cycle & Calendar
- Purposes, which explores the big theological questions
Second year students also take two courses:
- Ethics, which probes how we conduct ourselves in the world.
- Crossroads, which explores important periods in Jewish history.
At the completion of the program, participants receive a certificate from the Hebrew University.
The Melton & More Scholars Program features trimester-long courses that focus on specific topics. These courses can be taken independently, but also complement the strong background one receives in the Melton Core Program. The Scholars courses include classes developed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as well as classes developed by local faculty.
