Looking for Something to do Christmas Day? Come to the J

Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston presents Winter Break Bash 2016 with lots of kid fun and live theatre on Sunday, December 25. The celebration includes a bounce house, face painting, crafts and more for both preschool and elementary age students.

And families can enjoy the newly commissioned live theatre production of Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, a play about the adventures of legendary Jewish trickster, Hershel of Ostropol, as he outsmarts a host of Hanukkah-hating goblins, saving the holiday and becoming a hero of the town. If the title sounds familiar, it’s because this play is a new stage adaptation of the beloved, Caldecott Award-winning children’s book of the same name.  Now in print for over 25 years, the delightful book by Eric Kimmel has been read by generations of parents to their children.

The J successfully premiered the play in November. Adapted for the stage by Steve Garfinkel, coordinator for the J’s Theatre Program, and directed by veteran Children’s Theatre expert Ted Giles, “Hershel” is the first production written especially for and completely produced by the J in more than 10 years.

Preschool fun for ages 2 – PreK starts at 9:00 am with an abbreviated theatre presentation of Hershel at 10:00 a.m. Elementary activities start at 10: 00 a.m. with the live play starting at 11:00 am. Additional performances of Hershel take place on December 27 & 28.
