Adult Learn To Swim Program at the J

Houston, TX – “In my first swim lesson at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC near our house, my teacher was gentle and without judgment. The first exercise was to simply put my face in the water. I did this repeatedly for an hour. My heart seized in my chest,  and then relaxed, along with the practice,” said Leslie Contreras Schwartz. She writes in the October issue of Southwest Airlines Magazine about her fear of the water and how she knew it was time to learn to swim when her daughter was born.

She openly talks about her heart-wrenching and painful desire to be able to do something so simple to others. And how it was possible in a nurturing program like the one she took at the J. The J is offering another series of Adult Learn-To-Swim classes on January 9. Classes will be taught by certified Adult Learn To Swim instructors.

“Learning to swim is important for several reasons and mastering this skill at any age can benefit you throughout your life,” said Lee Hutchens, Aquatics Director at the J. “Our Adult Learn To Swim program at the J can help you in many ways that you may not have thought of before. It can help you with your own personal safety in and around water by knowing how to swim. It can allow you to enjoy activities or events in or around water that you have not been able to enjoy before, such as a cruise, going to a beach, playing with your children or grandchildren in a pool. Lastly and most importantly it will improve your own health by allowing to you have a way to exercise that is easier on your body then running or lifting in a gym.”

Instructors know this is a big step are offering Meet the instructor days January 3-5, 2017 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the main lobby of the J. The first two weeks are free for evaluation purposes, you may attend any class and they are open to everyone.

Leslie can now swim the full length of our Olympic sized pool. Though not gracefully, she adds but proudly.
