March Devoted to Celebrating Women
Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston is Celebrating Women during a month-long series of programs that will be inspirational, educational, cultural and social for women.
Make plans to get creative and find your inner artist at Paint and Sip with a Jewish Twist March 21. It’s like happy hour, but gives you an outlet to exercise your right-brain skills and socialize while doing it. Suzie Daum recently attended a paint-and-sip event for staff at the J.
“I love art, so to have the opportunity to do art as opposed to teaching art and doing it with kids was so fun and liberating,” said Suzie, a preschool teacher at the J’s Bertha Alyce School. “And when it’s over I have a handmade ready-to-hang Judaic piece of art to take home that serves as a memento of that fun night with my friends.”
Get ready to be inspired and spend an evening with Dina Hurwitz March 22, who is sharing her story of hope after her husband Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz was diagnosed with ALS. Dina shares her honest reflections of faith and hope smidst the battle of her husband’s terrible illness and raising her family. The event is sponsored by those who are inspired by the Hurwitz family, Laykie’s Gourmet will provide light bites and desserts, but this is more than just a catering job for Laykie Donin. She grew up three doors down from Yitzi in Brooklyn, New York and she met Dina in summer camp in upstate NY. They became fast friends.
“We were all so excited when Dina married Yitzi - what an incredible match, two amazing people who found each other,” said Laykie. “Yitzi is just one of those people that the second you met him you just loved him. They have seven beautiful children and then life changed when Yitzi was diagnosed with ALS in 2013. Dina is unbelievable. Dina is an inspiration.”
On March 26, Lisa F. Smith will talk about her new book, Girl Walks Out of a Bar. Presented in partnership with The Women Philanthropy and Young Adult Divisions of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston. Lisa talks about her job as a high-powered attorney and the pressure driving her to begin each day with a bottle of wine and three lines of cocaine.
“Celebrating Women’s month provides the opportunity to experience all of what the J has to offer year round. Music, art, author talks, film and Jewish learning,” said Morgan Steinberg, Adult Department Director. “Gather your girlfriends and make it an evening at the J during the month of March.”
