An Announcement Regarding West Houston Early Childhood Preschool

The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center board of directors has made the very difficult decision to close our West Houston facility, located at 1120 Dairy Ashford, effective August 31, 2018. Staff will continue to provide infant and early childhood programming at that location throughout the summer.

The significant loss of revenue and increased expenses resulting from Hurricane Harvey’s impact on our campus forced us to review all of our programs in all of our facilities. When we examined West Houston, we realized two things: One, the facility is aging and would need significant investment; and, two, the size of our early childhood program – which is currently the only program at that facility – has been steadily declining for five years, operating at a substantial deficit.

These two factors, balanced with our commitment to serve as fiscally responsible stewards of the agency, led to a decision made especially challenging because of its implications for the families and individuals involved. It is to them – our 56 children from 45 families, and our dedicated, 19-person staff – that we are fully committed to providing caring and compassionate professional support and assistance during this transition.

The J is utilizing two key community relationships to assist us through this transition. We have partnered with Collaborative for Children to ensure uninterrupted child care and ongoing resources for our loyal group of affected families, and we are working closely with Jewish Family Service Employment Services to provide outplacement counseling and employment resources for our excellent West Houston leadership and staff

Because we know you may have questions about the decision to close the West Houston facility, we have attempted to answer them here. If you have additional questions, please contact Joel Dinkin at 713.551.7232 or

The J values our relationships with our parents, our members and our entire community. The challenges we have faced have in many ways brought us closer together. This strength and belief in the importance of community continues to inspire our commitment to you.
