Concealed: Memoir of a Jewish-Iranian Daughter Caught Between the Chador and America

In her debut book, Esther Amini tells the story of growing up in 1960s New York as the American-born daughter of parents who had fled Mashhad, Iran’s holiest Muslim city. She was caught between two worlds – the dutiful daughter of traditional parents, and one who craved for more independence than tradition permitted.
Exploring the roots of her family dynamics, Amini uncovered the story of her parents’ early years in Mashhad; the history of Mashhad’s underground Jews; the event that lead her mother to leave; and her parents’ difficult journey to the U.S., where they faced a new threat: freedom.
