For the Love Of Books
If you have been to the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival at the J, chances are you have shopped the Bookstore. There is a dedicated group of volunteers responsible for it: Esther Chess, Linda Chess, Carol Emery, Ellen Gaber, Ann Glazier, Sandy Gomel, Robin Greenspan, Louise Kershman, Beulah Maltz, Ruth Morris, Claire Noll, Sheila Sack, Leenie Skolnik and Beverly Sufian set aside two weeks each fall and volunteer as book store managers at the Festival. Most of them have been doing it between 10-15 years.
Each lady will tell you there’s something about volunteering at the J, but they all agree that their love of books brings them to this place every fall.
“The J is an important part of the Jewish Community and I enjoy helping people pick out books and meeting the different authors,” said Leenie Skolnik. “I made nice new friends and look forward to seeing and spending time with them each year.”
“The Book Store is an intellectually stimulating place,” said Ann Glazier. “You can talk to someone and have a good, solid conversation about politics, cooking, etc. It’s just downright fun.”
“It is very rewarding. I have been doing this for so long, that it is just part of my life and what I do each year,” said Sheila Sack. “Barbara Lindenberg carries the load and we just support her.”
While they are all proud to be part of the team that makes the Book & Arts Festival happen, for most of them Oliver Lapin Family Day is one of their favorite days to volunteer.
“We love seeing children being read to on the big pillows by their mothers and fathers. They love helping grandparents find the perfect book for their grandkids and it’s nice to see everyone shopping for Hanukkah gifts,” said Beula Maltz.
Linda Chess started volunteering at the J when her son was in pre-school in 1982.
“It’s important for my kids to see me volunteer at the J, said Linda. “You get more than you give.”
We want to thank all of the Book Store Managers and volunteers for all the countless hours you spend to support this amazing community event. Make sure you come by and visit the book store when you’re at the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival now through November 12.
