BAS Kids ReadingFirst Lady Barbara Bush has a lasting legacy in the hearts of Americans as being an advocate for volunteerism and a dedicated matriarch to her family. For the families of Bertha Alyce Early Childhood Center, of which 1/3 flooded, Mrs. Bush will be remembered for a more personal reason.

After flooding in Hurricane Harvey, so much was lost in the homes of families at Bertha Alyce. In March, the entire school community was delighted to learn that the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation was giving each Bertha Alyce student ages 0-4 a gift of six books for the child’s home library.

Almost all the families of the school participated, choosing from favorite board books to classic children’s picture books. We eagerly await the arrival of the books this May, when a representative for the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation will be onsite distributing them to the families.

Mrs. Bush’s passion was for her family and for literacy. During this time of loss, we send comfort and condolences to the Bush family; and we know that for families of Bertha Alyce, Mrs. Bush’s memory will forever be a blessing to the families who benefited from her gift of a home library.

The Bertha Alyce School is a NAEYC-accredited preschool and Sheva Lab Community School. We currently have availability for children birth-2 in our early childhood program beginning in June. Learn more.
