Are you part of a book club and looking for your group’s next read? We’ve just announced our Community Read event for the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival and hope you’ll join us by reading Rachel Kadish’s new novel The Weight of Ink! Kadish will be speaking at the Book Festival on Monday, Nov 5 at 8:00 PM. For this event during the Festival, we ask book clubs and interested readers to read The Weight of Ink in advance of her author talk.
This novel weaves together the lives of two London women separated by centuries. An emigrant from Amsterdam in the 1660s, who becomes a scribe for a blind rabbi, and an unwell historian who has a passion for Jewish history become connected when the historian is approached by a former student who has discovered seventeenth-century Jewish documents. Uncovering the identity of the scribe, who marked her pages as “Aleph,” will be the historian’s ultimate project.
Rachel Kadish is the winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award and a truly gifted writer. Stefani Twyford and Lori Farris, co-chairs of the Community Read event, “feel that the Weight of Ink is not only a significant addition to the historical fiction category, but we are also fascinated with the insights into the gender roles that have suppressed women throughout time.” This event will be facilitated by Dr. Melissa Weininger of Rice University. Dr. Weininger specializes in the study of gender in Jewish literature.
Let the J know if your book club wants to read along. Contact Andrea Wolfe at email@example.com for VIP book club benefits. Participating book clubs will receive discussion questions and are invited to a pre-event meet and greet with the author. The Weight of Ink will be for sale at the J after August 27 and comes with free admission to the Nov 5 event.
