BAS JudaicsWe are so excited for the start of the 2019-2020 school year at the Bertha Alyce Early Childhood School (BAS)! Our teachers have been hard at work learning, growing, and preparing for the new school year that began this week.

Some of you may know that being a JCC preschool means we are part of a larger network which includes JCC preschools across North America. The Early Childhood branch of this network is called the Sheva Center. The Sheva Center offers JCC preschools an innovative approach to early childhood education, empowers teachers and directors, and positions JCC early childhood education centers as examples of excellence.

In the ClassroomSheva, which means seven in Hebrew, is a powerful number in Jewish thought and practice. As a JCC preschool, we use the Sheva framework to guide the Jewish component of our program.

Each of the teachers weave values into their classroom using seven Jewish lenses to reveal universal values such as gratitude, responsibility, and belonging. Our parents will see and hear more about this throughout the year from their child’s teachers.

This year, we are focusing on Brit, which is a Hebrew word that means covenant. The Sheva Institute tells us:

“A covenantal relationship enables us to partner with others in pursuit of shared vision, to grow, to risk, and to communicate with honesty. Both our personal and professional lives are enriched by binding relationships in which we feel a true sense of security; relationships in which our individuality is honored, our opinions are heard, our needs are considered.”

This lens relates to everything we do at BAS. The teachers and I want to partner with each and every parent to do what is best for their child, their family, and our school. We want each of our families to feel valued, appreciated, and heard. This school year, I hope our families feel this true sense of security; I hope that our children all have relationships in which their individuality is honored, their opinions are heard, and their needs are considered.

Leslie HolmesLeslie Holmes Named Preschool Gymnastics Coordinator

If you've ever been to our Houston Gymnastics Center, registered for a gymnastics class or attended the Houston National Invitational, you've probably met HGC Front Desk Manager Leslie Holmes. Starting this month, Leslie has begun her new role as Preschool Gymnastics Coordinator.

Leslie is looking forward to working with all of our preschoolers, both our Bertha Alyce School students as well as other preschool-aged kids in our gymnastics classes. If you see her in the gym, be sure to say "Congrats, Coach Leslie!"
