Dear Members,

We are pleased to provide you with an update regarding the reopening of our recreation facilities and an approximate timeframe to reopen our early childhood schools, Summer Fun at the J program and gymnastics.

Please know that the health and well-being of our members and staff continues to be our first priority. We look forward to bringing our community back together in the safest way possible, understanding that everyone will play a critical role in maintaining a healthy environment. Next week we will email you with specific details including operating hours and safety procedures.

Our Reopening Plan

Step 3: May 31
We will open the indoor and outdoor tennis courts, outdoor pool and fitness center. Please be aware that all of these facilities will not return immediately to full hours or capacity.

During step 3 in our reopening process, facilities will be limited to adults ages 18 and over only. Those under 18 will not be allowed access to the Tennis Center, Fitness Center or outdoor pool for the short term. We will provide an update on this timing as it becomes available. In addition, the outdoor pool will be available for lap swimming only, no recreational swimming.

Step 4: Early-Mid June
Our Summer Fun at the J program will begin. Registration is currently in progress. Please read our update for details.

We expect to open the Bertha Alyce and West Houston early childhood schools and our Houston Gymnastics Center in early to mid June as well.

Step 5: TBD
We anticipate being able to open Laykie’s Gourmet Café at the J and expand hours of operation for the facilities listed in Step 3.

Some Services Closed
Please note that until further notice, there will be a number of programs and services that we will not be able to offer including group exercise, basketball gym access, guest use of facilities, in-person senior programs, birthday parties and facility rentals.

Patrons of the J must recognize that while we are taking precautions as guided by health officials, community spread of COVID-19 is ongoing, and asymptomatic transmission is known to occur. Individuals should remain informed and take actions to support both their own and the community’s safety and well-being.

We are guided by the wisdom of our Jewish values, which have been and continue to be at the forefront of our decision-making process:

  • Pikuach Nefesh - above all else, 'saving a life' is our highest obligation; when we open our doors, we will take whatever precautions are necessary to keep our members safe and healthy.
  • Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh - all Jews are responsible for one another; we must constantly be looking out for each other during this time, ensuring that our community remains vibrant and that the vulnerable receive the care and attention they need.
  • She'at Hadehak - extraordinary moments call for extraordinary measures; this is an unprecedented time for everyone in the world--we must be aware of the ever-changing landscape of the situation and be prepared to shift our course at any given moment.
  • Kehillah Kedosha - 'holy community'; we recognize God’s presence in our human interactions, and we are committed to upholding our sacred J community, whether in person or online.

With these Jewish values along with the medical data shaping our policies and procedures, we are working to make the J as safe an environment as possible, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Sincerely,

Joel Dinkin
