An Update from Our CEO

Dear Friends,

Here at the J, just like at home with each of you, there are no easy answers during this pandemic. There are many difficult choices that we are making daily, driven by a set of core values: to provide essential services to support the community and provide some access to our facilities in a safe and healthy environment.

Although we are confident in the protocols that have been developed and implemented at the J, which we believe have been working quite well, our commitment to the health and safety of our broader community goes beyond the doors of the J. On June 26, when we rolled back our reopening plan, we did so to support the stay-at-home advisory order from Judge Hidalgo, and with concern for the significant surge of confirmed cases in Harris County. Unfortunately, the increases in confirmed cases continues to grow daily, at alarming rates.

Our Medical Task Force meets weekly and is monitoring two critical benchmarks that will guide our ability to reopen facilities and expand programs: 1) a steady decline of the number of confirmed cases, and 2) a steady decline of the positive cases as a percent of total tests administered. To date, we have not seen a decline in either benchmark and will continue to monitor the data as an indicator to guide our reopening plans.

Our commitment to you going forward will include:
  1. Keeping you well informed and providing weekly updates.
  2. Continuing to maintain our critical social service programs: child care for essential workers at BAS, West Houston and Summer Fun; Meals on Wheels and J Ride
  3. Continuing to offer adult lap swimming and outdoor tennis lessons, drills and play.  We will re-start family recreational swimming at the outdoor pool beginning July 18 as well as expand the hours of the outdoor tennis courts.
  4. Continuing to evaluate and refine our protocols, and creating new guidelines as needed in order to be ready when schools reopen. We want to provide you with continued confidence that your safety is our highest priority.
  5. Working to reopen facilities and expand programs, as guided by the Medical Task Force, and with the goal of remaining open long-term.
  6. Recognizing that the J's closures may create a financial hardship; if at any point you want to freeze your membership dues, please contact Leslie Lerner in our Member Services department at llerner@erjcchouston.org.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Feel free to call me at 713.551.7232 or email me at jdinkin@erjcchouston.org should you have any questions.  We hope you stay safe and well, and appreciate each of you as important members of our J family.

Sincerely,

Joel Dinkin
Chief Executive Officer
