The Past Twelve Months

A little over twelve months ago, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Children’s Scholarship Ball. A little over twelve months ago we announced that we were embarking on a major renovation project to transform the J. Twelve months ago, we informed the community that the J would close due to a virus that would define the days, weeks and months ahead for all of us.

These past twelve months have created challenges beyond our wildest imaginations and we were able to work through them thanks to you, our community. Together, we have hosted successful food drives, blood drives, provided childcare for essential workers, and we have not missed one day of delivery of meals to our 450 Meals on Wheels clients.

When we re-opened on June 1st, we had one goal; to provide programs and open our facilities in the safest manner possible.  After some trial and error and the diligence of our Health and Safety Medical Board, we found our balance and earned your trust. Your participation in our classes, programs and events, whether virtually or in person, is appreciated more than you know. As access to vaccines continues to grow, the is slowly returning to its role as the town square of Jewish life, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the J.

Anniversaries are a time to look back and to look ahead.  Our tradition teaches us that we cannot look to the future without recalling what we lost.  My father, David Dinkin of blessed memory died on Saturday, March 14, 2020.  Last week when I lit a Yahrzeit candle to commemorate the one-year anniversary of his deathI realized that every year when I light the Yahrzeit candle I will pause and reflect on his life and will also pause to reflect on these past twelve months and the lives lost, our struggles and the challenges throughout the pandemic.

Please join us in reflecting on the memories of the past year in the comments below. Share a memory at the J, a personal memory, a thank you to someone or something that has helped you this past year, or whatever you feel like sharing.

May the memories of the past twelve months serve as a source of strength and inspiration as we set our sights on a bright and healthy future.
