Summer Fun at the J FAQs

SUMMER FUN at the J is designed to provide children ages 3–entering 5th grade a weekly recreational summer experience. SUMMER FUN at the J will run from 9:00 AM–3:30 PM and offer an extended day option of 7:00 AM–6:00 PM. We have a wide variety of recreational activities planned, which includes a weekly Judaics component, as well as our traditional Havdalah and Shabbat celebrations. Children are also expected to cool off daily with recreational swim.

What are the SUMMER FUN at the J program options?
Children entering Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 will spend their day at our Bertha Alyce Early Childhood facility. The program will include interactive play and activities in a structured, yet flexible day. Children will participate in art projects, sing songs, enjoy stories, dramatic play and movement. A separate communication will be sent out to families originally registered for Camp Bami regarding the registration process.

Children entering Kindergarten–2nd grade will experience a variety of activities including: sports, movement, gymnastics, tennis, arts & crafts, music, and theatre.

Children entering 3rd-5th grade will experience a variety of activities including: sports, movement, gymnastics, tennis, arts & crafts, music, and theatre. Based on enrollment, children can choose a focus of arts, sports, or STEM. Additionally, beginning in July, we plan to offer specialty weeks of gymnastics, tennis, and performing and visual arts.

When will SUMMER FUN at the J start?
As we continue to wait on further information regarding state guidelines, our current plan is to begin on June 15 and run consecutively for 8 weeks beginning each Monday with the final week starting August 6. Please note that these dates are fluid, and subject to change. In the event we must push back the start date of SUMMER FUN at the J, any weeks that fall prior to that date will be canceled and your money will be fully refunded.

What hours will SUMMER FUN at the J run?
SUMMER FUN at the J will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 3:30 PM. We are also offering an extended day option that will run 7:00 AM–6:00 PM.

Who should register for SUMMER FUN at the J?
We encourage J families in need of summer childcare as well as those seeking a summer recreational and social experience for their child(ren) to apply. We encourage families to apply for as many weeks of summer programming as needed or desired. Initial registration will open to families previously registered for 2020 J Camps. Families will be contacted by email in the order that they originally applied for J Camps, and will have a limited amount of time to secure their spot for the summer.

What are the weekly fees?
SUMMER FUN at the J programs have a fee of $350 for each week of traditional programming, and $360 for specialty programming offered to 3rd-5th graders in gymnastics, tennis, and performing and visual arts. Fees were influenced by increased staffing needs required to maintain small group ratios and implementation of new health and safety measures.

Will there be any bus transportation?
There is no bus transportation. You will drop your child off directly at either the Bertha Alyce School Facility, J Main Campus, Merfish Teen Center or Ellen Boniuk School Facility in West Houston. Tell me more about the health and safety protocols?
Our health and safety protocols are being guided by the J’s Medical Advisory Group, the American Camping Association and will follow all recommended guidelines set forth by public officials. We are developing these protocols with the intention of limiting group sizes to no more than 10 children and 2 adults. Groups will be self-contained and only interact with other groups through appropriate social-distancing. Drop-off and pick-up will be limited to outdoor carpool. There will be regular disinfecting and sanitation of facilities, hand sanitizer will be available in common areas and classrooms, and routine trips to handwashing stations will occur. We also plan to roll out comprehensive procedures for daily health screenings for all children and staff.

As your week of SUMMER FUN at the J approaches we will be in touch with specific requirements for daily screening. It is our goal to partner with you as parents to ensure that we are providing the safest possible environment for all children and staff participating in SUMMER FUN at the J.

How will we talk about health and safety guidelines with your children?
We plan to have an upbeat outlook on maintaining health and safety over the summer and will speak with children accordingly using age-appropriate language. We will create an expectation with all children about healthy habits and safety habits and will use this language through the day. We will be sure to share the language and expectations with you so you can help reinforce these habits with your children at home.

When and how can I register?
Registration for rising K-5th grade will begin the week of May 18. Registration priority will be based on when a family originally registered for J Camps. You will receive an email with a registration link that will enable you to enroll in SUMMER FUN at the J. Once you receive the link, you will have 48 hours to register before the next group of priority registrants receive their link to enroll. Registration links do not expire. Once you receive your link you can register at any time pending capacity.

Will there be a waitlist and how will it work?
Yes, once the program meets capacity, you will be added to a waitlist. As spots open up, we will move children off the waitlist in order of registration. There is no charge to add a child onto the waitlist. Once you are notified of a space opening up on the waitlist you will have 24 hours to register and secure the spot before we reach out to the next person in line.

How do I register if I am receiving financial aid?
If you have applied or will be applying for scholarship, you will need to register over the phone. Once you receive your registration email, please call the J at 713.729.3200, we will have a team of staff ready to take your registration over the phone.

How will financial aid work?
If you have already applied for financial aid and received an award letter, your award amount will be adjusted accordingly based on your new selections in the SUMMER FUN at the J program. Your new award amount will be emailed 5 days after registration is closed. We are also still currently reviewing appeals and will email final appeal decisions 5 days after the close of registration.

If you did not originally apply for financial aid but will now need assistance due to unemployment, work reduction, or loss of wages related to COVID-19, you may be eligible for an award. Please apply by May 22 at:

What is the cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel, there will be a processing fee of $50 per week per child. If you cancel 10 days or more before the start of the week you registered for we will refund all of your weekly fees less the processing fee. No refunds can be provided within 10 days of the start of your registered week.
