I Have the Right To: A High School Survivor’s Story of Sexual Assault, Justice, and Hope
Saturday, Nov 10 | 8:00 PM
Exclusively for Teens
This memoir is about Chessy Prout, who, in 2014, was sexually assaulted at a prestigious boarding school in New Hampshire. After reporting the incident to police and testifying against her attacker in court, Chessy received unexpected backlash from her school community. In an effort to help other survivors find their voice, she broke her anonymity. Chessy’s story powerfully advocates for solutions to upend the current rape culture.
Co-author, Jenn Abelson, has been an investigative reporter for the Boston Globe Spotlight Team for 16 years.
Jewish Teen Philanthropy Initiative 10-12 Gr
Jewish Teen Philanthropy Initiative (JTPI) aims to inspire a diverse group of Jewish high school students to make a real difference in the greater Houston Jewish Community. Participants will raise and allocate $10,000 to address real community issues through a consensus building and project-based learning model. Teens will meet monthly to research and explore organizations and causes they wish to support, learn about the process of grant making, hear from local philanthropists, and explore their own Jewish values. Nomination and online application required.
Target Teen Leadership 10-11 Gr
Target Teen Leadership is a semester long experiential leadership training program for 20 existing and high potential 10th and 11th graders in the greater Houston Jewish community. Teens will receive exposure and awareness to a breadth of Jewish community executives and agencies, develop a network of peers across the community and provide tools and resources for a variety of leadership topics that are applicable to present day and in the future through a Jewish lens. Nomination and application required.
Teen Leadership Council
The heart of J TEENS is our Teen Leadership Council (TLC). Every teen program at the J features the guidance and leadership of the TLC. The more than 20 teens who served on the TLC also serve their schools, their synagogues and youth groups, and their BBYO chapters and region. Members of the TLC represent a crucial voice for the greater Houston teen community, working on programs that engage Jewish teens in leadership, social, athletic, cultural, service-oriented, and intellectual experiences.
From September through May, the TLC meets monthly, engaging in leadership activities, planning programs, developing marketing strategies, and meeting with community leaders and organizations. Through their hard work and dedication, members of the TLC earn a minimum of 50 community service hours.
