Dina's Challah Recipe

  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 packet of yeast
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup of oil
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 2 eggs + 1 for brushing over the challah
  • vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 3.5 - 4 cups of (bread flour recommended) flour
  • raisins optional

  1. Measure 3/4 cup warm (NOT HOT) water (10-15 sec in the microwave should do it)
  2. Add yeast packet to warm water and let it sit
  3. Mix your wet ingredients together
  4. Sift your flour into another bowl then add the pinch of salt and sugar
  5. Add the yeast mixture to the wet ingredients.
  6. Then add flour/dry ingredients to the wet mixture. You can use a spoon but clean hands are preferred. Get sticky - enjoy the mess!
  7. Let it rise in a bowl for at least 2 hours. The dough should be doubled in size and use a dish towel or something to cover it to keep it moist
  8. Once it has doubled, split it into 3, 4, or 5 ropes (snakes) to braid
  9. Braid and then let rest for an hour again covered
  10. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  11. Beat 1 egg and brush over braided challah
  12. Place in the oven for 40 min or until golden brown on the top
