Best known for his now-iconic photographs documenting Eastern European Jewish communities before the Holocaust, Russian-born Roman Vishniac was originally a pioneering microbiologist. Director Laura Bialis’ exceptional documentary examines his decades of groundbreaking work, weaving in many of Vishniac’s photographs and writings, archival footage, interviews with his daughter and commentary from historians to present a penetrating, nuanced look at one of the most pivotal photographers of the 20th century.
