Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre Presents Ariel Rivka Dance
Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston presents Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre, one of the most anticipated dance events in Houston, January 13 – February 12, 2017. Dance Month is celebrating 37 seasons of showcasing prominent choreographers, master teachers, companies and dancers.
How do choreographers tell a story? What is the relationship between movement and music, dancers, and musicians? How do the languages of dance and music complement, encourage and challenge each other? Before the dance performance, Artistic Director Ariel Grossman and Composer David Homan will lead an interactive workshop with the audience. David and Ariel will discuss the art of collaboration, and how they use music and movement to tell a story.
The ARD dancers will then perform The Book of Esther: The Journey of Queen Vashti and Queen Esther. See the stories of Vashti and Esther come to life in an educational, family-friendly performance. A condensed, 25-minute dance performance tells the story of two fearless, powerful women and the community that supports them. This is a free family program on Sunday, January 22 at 10:00 am in the Kaplan Theatre recommended for ages 3-5. It is a Jewish Federation of Greater Houston event for PJ Library Families and the public. This interactive program is sure to delight audience members of all ages.
Ariel Rivka Dance continues on Sunday, January 22 at 3:00 p.m. to share an afternoon of repertoire. The work explores emotionally driven movement with underlying currents of technique and structure. An all-female contemporary dance company, each of the eight women bring a particular perspective and interpretation of the choreography resulting in a stunning collaboration. Collaboration and accessibility are the heart of ARD, and produce shows that incorporate various styles of dance and music, exposing the audiences to quality artistry in an inviting way. Ariel Rivka Dance is led by married choreographer/composer team Ariel Grossman and David Homan based in NY/NJ. Named one of Jersey (New) Moves Emerging Choreograhers, ARD was recently presented at NJPAC. Rutgers University, the White Wave Rising Series and Inaugural Solo/Duo Festival.
All dance performances take place in the Kaplan Theatre at the J. Master classes are in the J’s dance studio. See the compete brochure and purchase tickets at www.erjcchouston.org/dancemonth. Find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat.
