Concert celebrates the music of Leonard Bernstein

Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston joins in the two-year global celebration of the life and career of Leonard Bernstein with a concert starring David Krohn on September 10, 2017 at

4:00 p..m. Bernstein:  A Life of Music brings Krohn back to the Kaplan Theatre Stage for a retrospective of Leonard Bernstein’s life featuring his classical selections, art song and musicals.

This concert is one of many Bernstein events in Houston, including Houston Grand Opera’s spring production of West Side Story, which will be the first major American opera company to produce it, complete with full rights for Jerome Robbins’ choreography. Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebrates this 20th century cultural giant with more than 1,000 events on six continents. Bernstein, the composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador, and humanitarian would have celebrated his 99th birthday on August 25, 2017, which launches the celebration.

“I am thrilled to present this special concert featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein – a giant of American music,” said Krohn. “As we prepare for his centennial year, I look forward to sharing this inspiring man and his music, full of characteristic vitality, virtuosity and wit.”

A Juilliard-trained opera singer, Krohn was schooled by his father in Jewish Liturgical and Yiddish repertoire. His diverse repertoire spans the Baroque cantatas of Handel to musical theatre and Billy Joel, but the closest music to his heart comes from the Yiddish and Jewish tradition.  Following in his father’s footsteps, he trained in the Eastern European tradition of cantorial music and has led High Holiday services for over 12 consecutive years. Beginning in 2005, David began a series of successful Yiddish and Hebrew concerts, continuing his father’s legacy by exposing traditional Jewish music to audiences across the United States. In addition to his work at Houston Grand Opera as Associate Director of Development, Krohn currently serves as Chazzan in Residence at Congregation Brith Shalom.

“David and I talked about doing a concert during the coming season,” said Assistant Executive Director at the J, Marilyn Hassid. “David offered up two ideas, both close to his heart, and there was no question—for his third concert on our stage, it had to be Bernstein.”

“Everyone I know loves Bernstein, but very few people realize the true range of his compositions,” said Krohn. “They will be on full display on September 10th at the J for this amazing program.”
