|The J Announces its 2019 Community Read|
|Tuesday, August 13, 2019|
The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston has announced its Community Read for the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival, November 2-13, 2019. Author Julie Orringer will be speaking on her new book, The Flight Portfolio, on Monday, November 4 at 7:30 PM. The J is calling for book clubs around the city to join the event by reading The Flight Portfolio this fall.
One of The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and Entertainment Weekly’s most anticipated books of 2019, The Flight Portfolio is inspired by the World War II story that few have ever heard. It describes the real-life quest of Varian Fry, an unlikely hero who saves the lives and work of Europe’s great minds from the impending Holocaust. Among his many clients were Hannah Arendt, Franz Werfel, André Breton, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, and Marc Chagall. Entertainment Weekly calls this book “masterfully crafted and impossible to put down, The Flight Portfolio offers a testament to the enduring power of art, and love, in any form.”
After the success of last year’s Community Read, Lori Farris and Stefani Twyford have again agreed to chair this year’s Community Read Program. They are are very excited about the book they've chosen. “We both fell in love with The Flight Portfolio. Not only is it masterfully crafted, but it also describes a lifestyle and sliver of time that few have covered. The rescue by Varian Fry of Europe’s greatest minds--artists, scientists, and thinkers--from the impending Holocaust will surely generate lots of intelligent discussion. We look forward to hearing Julie Orringer share her thoughts along with her digital presentation during the event.” explained Twyford. “We are hoping book clubs all over the Houston area will join us in this great read for their October selection and come to our November 4 Community Read Program."
