Experience the Benefits of Online Dance with Elijah Alhadji Gibson

Instructor Elijah Alhadji Gibson will lead two virtual dance classes, Contemporary and Jazz/Funk, presented by the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston (the J), beginning on Monday, October 12. These online classes can be enjoyed from the comfort of one’s own home.

The Contemporary class is a hybrid of movement styles in which Gibson focuses on the exploration of spine articulation. The influence of ballet technique, jazz expressivity, and centering of modern dance culminates into the fusion demanding technical skill, musicality and an expression of emotion. Jazz /Funk borrows a lot of movement from Hip Hop and Jazz dance. The mixture of styles wrap into a style that is both fun and expressive.

Whether a beginner, a former dancer, or intermediate/advanced, it’s never too late to learn to dance. There are many styles to choose from, such as ballet, jazz, tap, or contemporary. Some take dance to manage their weight, improve their mental skills, and tone their muscles.

With nearly everyone confined to their homes, online dance classes help can relieve stress. Dancing encourages relaxation and is a great emotional outlet, as dancers use the body’s movements to reflect their feelings. Dance lessons also instill confidence and a sense of achievement.

Elijah Alhadji Gibson is the founder and Artistic Director of Social Movement Contemporary Dance, a dance company based in Houston. Gibson is originally from San Diego, California. He attended the San Diego School for the Performing Arts. Mr. Gibson continued his education and studied dance in college at Sam Houston State University under the direction of Dana Nicolay and received his Master of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. In 1999, Gibson joined the world-renowned Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago where he toured nationally and internationally for eight years. He has worked with or performed the works of the late Gus Giordano, Margo Sappington, Christopher Huggins, Jon Lehrer, Mia Michaels, Liz Imperio, Randy Duncan, Tony Powell, Ron De Jesus, and Davis Robertson, among many others. Mr. Gibson has served on the faculties of RDA Midwest, Gus Giordano Jazz Intensive, American College Dance Festival Association, Jazz Dance World Congress, Dance Masters of Wisconsin, Chicago National Association just to name a few. Mr. Gibson has been on faculty at Shenandoah University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sam Houston State University, and the University of Texas at Austin. Gibson has dabbled in every aspect of the arts from dance, theater, and film.
