The J Announces its Community Read

The Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston has announced its Community Read for the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival, November 3-13, 2018. Rachel Kadish will be speaking on her new book, The Weight of Ink on Monday, November 5 at 8:00 PM. The J is calling for book clubs around the city to join the event by reading The Weight Of Ink this fall.

 
2018 Raymond E. Plotkin Maccabi Tennis Scholarship Awarded to Benjamin Rozen

Rubenstein JCC of Houston and the Plotkin family annually awards a Team Houston tennis player the Raymond E. Plotkin Scholarship to play in the JCC Maccabi Games®. Fifteen year old Benjamin Rozen, son of Ariel and Ira Rozen, who goes to Bellaire High School, was named as this year’s recipient of the scholarship at the Team Houston send-off on Tuesday evening, July 31, 2018.

Revitalized J Camps Program Provides New Day Camp Options

Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC’s day camp program, J Camps, is a summer favorite for children of all ages. This year, J Camps is even bigger and better, with a refreshed lineup including many completely new camps with a focus on STEM, sports and the arts.

“We were seeking to revitalize the J Camps program this summer with the goal of bringing some new and exciting camps while also offering our tried and true favorites. We thought about ways to enhance our programming across all ages from toddlers through teens. We have received a lot of wonderful feedback thus far about the changes we have made to J Camps and are so excited for this summer!” said Michelle Fingeret, Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Children & Camping committee chair. Many J Camps include instructional swim, particularly for the youngest campers. “Another exciting new feature is an updated swimming curriculum with digital swim reports,” Fingeret added.

 
Explore the Creative Process with Houston’s Own

Houston, TX – Many of us have something we’ve always wanted to learn ---to paint, dance, or play an instrument, but few know where to begin. Workshops allow you to kickstart your creativity or learn a specialized skill in a convenient shorter format. Taught by professional artists, workshops are available for students at all levels of experience and are kept small to ensure that individual attention can be given to everyone. Experienced and novice artists, young and old, will join us for our Exploring the Artistic Process with Houston’s Own workshop series at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC.

 
Summer Adult Art Classes

Houston, TX – Summer marks the beginning of a new season and the opening of the newly-renovated art studio for drawing, painting, ceramics and jewelry making at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC. “The students are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to set up the art studios and return to many of the classes that were offered before Hurricane Harvey,” stated Morgan Steinberg, Adult Program Director.

 
Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Elects New President

Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston has elected Lauren Kaufman Blachman as the new president of its Board of Directors. She was officially sworn in as president for a two-year term on May 15, 2018 at the 82nd Annual Meeting. The evening also honored former president Debbie Kaplan. 

“I am excited to take on this responsibility and privilege of leading the J’s volunteer team and getting to partner with an incredible staff, so ably led by Chief Executive Officer Joel Dinkin,” said Kaufman Blachman. “I feel very fortunate, but prepared to take the helm, from the experience I have had watching so many talented presidents who have come before me,” she continued.
