Code of conduct

The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center is dedicated to maintaining a safe, respectful and welcoming environment for all members, guests and staff. To uphold this standard, everyone who enters our facilities or participates in our programs is expected to act responsibly, respectfully and in alignment with our community values. 

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

All members, guests, participants and staff are expected to adhere to the following policies while on JCC property or participating in any JCC-sponsored activity:  

  • Conduct must reflect a family-friendly atmosphere at all times. Participants must refrain from any of the prohibited conduct listed below. 
  • All individuals must use designated entrances and adhere to established protocols for entry and access by scanning membership credentials or following the visitor sign-in check-in process. 
  • Employee offices, workspaces and other restricted areas are for authorized personnel only. Members and guests may not enter these areas without staff permission or escort. 
  • Report any suspicious, inappropriate or unsafe behavior to a JCC staff member immediately.  
  • Unattended bags or packages are not permitted and should be reported to staff.  
  • Pets are not allowed on JCC campuses or inside buildings (service and assistance animals are exempt).  
  • Appropriate attire is required throughout the facility. Shirts are required in the fitness center and all indoor common areas and closed-toe athletic shoes must be worn in the fitness center. Swimmers must be dry before entering the cafe. 
  • Personal hygiene must be maintained to prevent unpleasant odors and promote cleanliness.  
  • Children under age 13 must be actively supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.  
  • Everyone is responsible for cleaning up after themselves and helping maintain a clean, safe facility. 

PROHIBITED CONDUCT

The following behaviors are strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action:  

  • Use of abusive, threatening, vulgar or offensive language, including shouting, swearing, intimidation, name-calling or verbal abuse directed toward members, guests, volunteers or staff.  
  • Physical aggression, assault, fighting, threatening behavior or any hostile physical contact.  
  • Harassment, discrimination or intimidation of any kind, including stalking, leering, unwanted interactions or communications, sexual harassment or behavior motivated by bias or prejudice that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.  
  • Displaying or distributing symbols, images or materials intended to threaten, intimidate, promote hate or create a hostile environment for others.  
  • Threatening, harassing or interfering with J employees or volunteers while they are performing their duties, including refusing to follow reasonable instructions or entering staff-only work areas without authorization.  
  • Engaging in business activities that conflict with J services, such as unauthorized personal training, instruction or lessons. 
  • Failing to provide active supervision for children under the age of 13 who are not participating in a J program or class. 
  • Granting unauthorized access to the facility, including sharing building access credentials or otherwise circumventing security procedures.  
  • Theft, vandalism, misuse of J property or intentional damage to facilities or equipment.  
  • Possession or concealment of weapons or objects reasonably perceived as weapons, except by law enforcement or authorized security personnel.  
  • Use of tobacco products, including vaping and e-cigarettes, anywhere on J property.  
  • Possession, use, distribution or sale of illegal drugs or misuse of prescription drugs.  
  • Consumption of alcohol on J premises unless permitted as part of an authorized event.  
  • Taking photographs or videos of others without their consent. 
  • Loitering, soliciting, gambling, panhandling, proselytizing or any other behavior that disrupts J operations or interferes with another person’s ability to safely enjoy the facility.  
  • Any conduct that endangers the health, safety, security or wellbeing of members, guests, volunteers and staff. 

MEMBERSHIP SUSPENSION OR REVOCATION

All incidents involving misconduct or policy violations will be investigated, responded to and  documented within a member’s file. Violations will be reviewed by J leadership to determine the appropriate course of action based on the nature and severity of conduct, as well as any prior incidents.  

 

Parents and guardians are fully responsible for the conduct of their children while on J property and while participating in J programs and may be held accountable for violations of these policies. 

 

The J reserves the right to take necessary actions to protect the safety, security and wellbeing of its members, guests, staff and property. Enforcement measures may include, but are not limited to, verbal or written warnings, refusal of service, removal from the premises, suspension or revocation of membership and/or facility access, issuance of a trespass notice and referral to law enforcement when appropriate. Membership suspension or revocation is at the discretion of J leadership based on the severity of a violation and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
