Jewish Communities Around the World

Jewish history is a global story. In this 8-week course, participants will explore the development of Jewish communities across the diaspora, examining how Jews established vibrant, distinct cultures in regions as varied as Ethiopia, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, and East Asia .Each session will highlight a different community, such as Ethiopian Jews, the Bene Israel and Cochin Jews of India, the Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan, and the Jews of China, placing them in their historical and cultural contexts. Through discussion, images, and primary sources, we will consider how geography, politics, and local customs shaped Jewish life, and how these communities maintained connections to broader Jewish traditions. This course invites participants to expand their understanding of Jewish identity, diversity, and resilience across time and place.

Jewish History from the Roman Empire to Modern Israel | Part 1

This post-Biblical Jewish history course will span eight weeks (four in the fall and four in the spring). This overview course will begin with Jews in the Roman Empire and take you until the creation of the modern state of Israel. Part 1 (this fall) will cover topics from the first century through the Middle Ages, consisting of four engaging classes on the Jewish revolts, emergence of rabbinic Judaism, competition with early Christianity, life in the Middle Ages and treatment by Muslims and Christians including the origins of European antisemitism. Great for all – from beginners to history buffs.

Genesis (Bereshit) Part 1 – From Adam to Abraham: The First 20 Generations

Explore the first book of the Torah — from the creation of Adam and Eve to the story of Abraham and Sarah, including the very first sibling rivalry that ended in murder. Over ten sessions, we’ll discuss multiple universal narratives which serve as the foundation of the Jewish faith. Leaners will gain insight into the story of the flood, the Tower of Babel, and much more. We’ll examine the themes of family, faith, honor, and power and discuss how these stories have influenced our people — throughout history and to this very day.

Foundations of Jewish Family Living: Values for Parents to Share with Their Children 

This rich learning experience for adults will provide an opportunity for you to bring the Jewish conversation home to share with your young child. At a time in your family’s life when your child is experiencing his or her own Jewish education, Foundations of Jewish Family Living provides you with the learning, the language, and the confidence to be a teacher to your own children. 2-3 hands-on family experiences (where children and their families are invited) will also be offered to further create connections for parents and children to learn, explore, and meet other Jewish families. This course will take place in person and/or online and is supported by a Local Impact Fund grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.
