Painters of the J: Student Exhibition
December 10 – December 28
This student exhibition showcases the artwork of students currently enrolled in the J’s mixed-level course “Drawing and Painting for The Art Lover.” In this collection, you’ll find a diverse range of paintings that reflect the individual paths these artists have taken. Grounded in a shared exploration of art history, our students have honed their preferences and cultivated their own styles. Through museum visits, classroom discussions and hands-on painting sessions, they’ve moved beyond imitation, developing the skills to bring their personal visions to life.
One of the key drivers of this evolution has been a deep dive into the elements of art. By understanding concepts like line, color, form and composition, students have empowered themselves to draw inspiration from art history in nuanced ways. For instance, you’ll see echoes of Impressionist sensibilities in Ian Kavin’s landscapes and the bold and free brushwork of the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s in the work of Toni Robbins. Learning about the elements of art has provided a toolkit that allows these artists to weave threads of influence from the past into their contemporary expressions, resulting in a collection that is both rooted in tradition and propelled by personal innovation.
