Our Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot lunches to homebound seniors Monday-Friday. Leslie Morrison is one of our regular volunteer drivers, and she brings her three children to help. She recently reflected on her experience volunteering for Meals on Wheels:
We are proud to announce our Senior Companions Program (SCP) volunteer Julia Penson has been selected as a WellCare Champion. The WellCare Champion competition, presented by WellCare Health Plans, recognizes the exceptional service of residents in Southeast Texas on behalf of older adults.
The WellCare Grand Champion will be chosen through a public voting process August 5-September 13, and his or her selected nonprofit organization will be awarded $25,000 as a charitable grant. You can vote once per day from each of your devices.
Penson exemplifies the qualities of a WellCare Grand Champion. A smile on her face, she often rolls up at five in the morning to help her first client as an SCP volunteer.
Volunteers like Michael Brown sustain the Meals on Wheels program at the J. With the summer here, many of our regular volunteers go on vacation, and our local homebound seniors still need their daily hot meal and a friendly face. We need regular volunteers just as much as we need a casual volunteer to come help once or twice each month.
Michael shares his rewarding experience about the program.
The Evelyn Rubenstein JCC hosted a group of Chase bank volunteers to assist with delivering Meals on Wheels to the local community. The group delivered to nearly 60 of the 300+ hungry seniors that receive a hot meal Monday-Friday each week.
Our seniors really enjoy seeing a friendly face and a hot lunch, and our volunteers feel rewarded by being able to help with such a unique and special experience.
An Evelyn Rubenstein JCC-sponsored program that provides companionship and support to isolated seniors is growing both its client and volunteer base thanks to a recent, sizable contribution from an anonymous donor through the Houston Jewish Community Foundation.
The donation allows the J’s Senior Companions Program (SCP) to expand, helping even more Houston-area seniors live with dignity and independence while also supporting volunteers’ sense of health and well-being. SCP is a national service program sponsored by the J that matches low-income older adult volunteers with senior clients looking for companionship. It also provides much needed and welcome assistance for family members who are caring for their aging parents.
We are proud to announce that our very own Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Foster Grandparent volunteer, Blynthia Scott (AKA Granny Blu), has been selected as a nominee for WellCare | TexanPlus® Grand Champion. Blynthia, along with the other four Champions, exemplifies excellence by giving back to our local community and making a difference in the lives of older adults.
Granny Blu lives a life full of compassion and devotion. She volunteers as a Foster Grandparent 40 hours a week at the Harris County Psychiatric Center, working with youth with mental illness.
