AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program of Harris County
Through the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program, adults age 55 and older make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth across Harris County.
Foster Grandparents serve as mentors, tutors, and caring role models in schools, early childhood centers, and community organizations. Through one-on-one support, volunteers help children strengthen academic skills, build confidence, and develop positive relationships.
Volunteers typically serve 15–40 hours per week for a year or longer. The program provides training and support, and eligible volunteers may receive a tax-free stipend, transportation assistance, supplemental insurance, and other benefits.

What does a Foster Grandparent volunteer do?
Foster Grandparents volunteer between 15-40 hours per week and are role models, mentors, and friends to children with exceptional needs.
Volunteer activities may include:
- Playing and reading with young children in childcare or Head Start centers.
- Helping children with basic academic skills and providing one-on-one tutoring.
- Providing children unconditional support and helping develop social skills.
- Mentoring teenagers and young mothers in need of guidance and support.
- Caring for premature infants or children with disabilities.
- Mentoring children of veterans and deployed military.
Who can be a Foster Grandparent?
- Must be 55 years or older
- Commit to volunteering 15-40 hours per week
- Meet established income eligibility guidelines
- Pass FBI fingerprint and background check

Our volunteers:
- Are screened and trained
- Provide one-on-one mentoring and tutoring
- Support academic, social, and emotional development
- Serve 15-40 hours per week
Our partners include: Schools, Head Start and childcare programs, after-school programs, shelters, developmental centers, and other eligible nonprofit and public organizations.
Partners provide: volunteer schedules, on-site supervision, role-specific training, and ongoing communication with FGP staff.
